Cubbon Park open wells

CUBBON PARK

The Cubbon Park is a historic park also known as Sri. Chamarajendra Park, situated in the center of the city. The park is surrounded by several buildings like Vidhana Soudha, State Central library and the High Court Buildings – the Attara Kacheri and several other organizations and a Central Administrative Area within the park[1].

Historical Background:

The Cubbon Park was inaugurated by Sri John Meade (Acting Commissioner of Mysore) in the year 1870. The vast landscape of the park was conceived by Major General Richard Sankey, the then Chief Engineer of the State. The park was named "Meade’s Park" to honor Sri John Meade and later it was changed to Cubbon Park. There were several changes and improvements were made continuously post inception. The name of the park was officially changed to "Sri. Chamarajendra Park" in the year 1927 to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of Sri. Krishna raja Wodeyar’s rule in Mysore State.Cubbon Park is under the control of the Department of Horticulture. The Deputy Director of Horticulture (Cubbon Park) is responsible for the administration and maintenance of the park[2].

About the wells of Cubbon Park:

Wells are extremely important to all societies. In many places, wells provide a reliable and sufficient supply of water for irrigation, home uses, industries and several other purposes. In Cubbon Park, we could find 7 wells which have good quantity of water in them but not maintained properly. If we could maintain the 7 wells in a proper condition then it can be used for daily usage and even for drinking purpose and it would be a great achievement for Horticulture Department and as well as for the people of Bangalore.
